Organisers of the Lagos Grand Horse Race have announced plans for the first edition of the event. They aim to make Lagos a top spot for horse racing, sports tourism, and cultural entertainment, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The three-day event, themed “Race Into The Future,” will take place from September 11 to 13, 2026, at the National Stadium in Surulere. Organisers expect between 20,000 and 30,000 spectators for the grand finale.

At the official launch in Lagos, Femi Fashoro, the founder of the Lagos Grand Horse Race, said the event will mix horse racing with music, fashion, art, and culture. This aims to create a top-notch sporting and entertainment experience.

“This is not just about racing. We want to bring sports and entertainment together. Lagos is a global centre for tourism, arts, and culture, and we believe we can do even more. This is the future of horse racing in Africa,” Fashoro said.

He told journalists that about 50 horses will be available for rent for participants who do not own horses. “We are collaborating with people already involved in horse racing while also recruiting new participants. We will provide horses for those who cannot afford one. It won’t be only people who own horses that can participate,” he said.

Fashoro added that around 100 horses are expected at the event. Some will race while others will be part of cultural displays, ceremonial parades, and fashion showcases.

Toheeb Dosumu, the Director of Administration and Human Resources, represented Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. He confirmed the state government’s support for the initiative, calling it a good way to promote tourism and economic development.

Dosumu mentioned that horse racing has a long history in Lagos, dating back to 1904. He added that the state is dedicated to supporting projects that engage young people and boost the tourism sector.

“The ministry will always support worthwhile initiatives, especially those that engage young people. This collaboration will provide a significant boost to tourism, culture, and the economy,” he said.

He also noted that the partnership between the Lagos State Government and the organisers will create chances for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, artisans, tour guides, and other businesses. This will further improve Lagos’ image as a top destination for sports and cultural tourism.
