Lagos to launch special number plates for people with disabilities

The Lagos State Government has started plans to create special vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities. This is part of efforts to improve inclusion, accessibility, and mobility across the state.

This idea was the main topic during a visit by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency. Both agencies talked about working together on a friendly vehicle identification system for people with disabilities.

In a post shared on Lagos State’s Facebook page on Wednesday, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, called the initiative a big step towards fulfilling Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s dream of making “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”

“The special number plates will help with recognition, accessibility, and movement for persons with disabilities throughout the state. This initiative also fits with the idea of inclusive governance,” Muri-Okunola said.

He mentioned that the agency has begun talks with the Federal Road Safety Corps about the number plates. They will start the necessary administrative steps while working closely with LASODA to make sure everything goes well.

Earlier, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, the General Manager of LASODA, said the visit was to start important talks about the special number plates designed for persons with disabilities in Lagos State.

“This initiative should include all kinds of persons with disabilities, along with parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers. The system will help with identification, accessibility, and support for the disability community,” Oyetunde-Lawal said.

She added that the special number plates would show the government’s promise to create a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are recognized, respected, and can fully take part in all areas of life.

“The proposed number plates show the government’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. We urge all stakeholders to support inclusion as a shared duty and back policies that improve the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities,” she said.

Both agencies showed their dedication to pushing this initiative forward. This aligns with the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which was set up to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, remove discrimination, and promote equal chances in every sector.

The meeting included directors and senior staff from LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
