The Lagos State Sports Trust Fund plans to renovate important facilities at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park, Yaba. This is part of efforts to improve old sports infrastructure ahead of the first National Intermediate Games set for October.
The renovation will focus on the indoor sports hall and the neglected squash courts at the complex. For many years, this facility has been one of Lagos' top spots for developing grassroots sports.
This announcement came during a visit to the complex on Tuesday. LSSTF Chairman, Wahid Oshodi, confirmed the state's commitment to bringing the facility up to modern standards.
Oshodi called the complex the heart of grassroots sports in Nigeria. He highlighted the need to modernize the facility.
"This is the home of talent discovery in Nigeria.
"Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved that we update, renovate, and do whatever it takes to bring this facility back to international standard," Oshodi said.
The renovation is part of Lagos's preparations for the National Intermediate Games. This event aims to find and nurture young talents across Nigeria.
Oshodi mentioned that work is already going on at the site. He said efforts will be ramped up to meet the deadline.
"We have just a few months, but work is ongoing. The plan now is to accelerate progress and ensure completion before the end of September," he said.
He praised Sanwo-Olu's support for grassroots sports. He noted that this project goes beyond just competition. It aims to provide recreational spaces for young people and help reduce social issues.
Lekan Fatodu, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission and a member of the LSSTF board, called the planned renovation an important step for sports in the state.
"This is an opportunity to restore past glory while ensuring sustainability through proper maintenance. Whether for recreation or competition, the facility will serve its purpose," Fatodu said.
He added that hosting the National Intermediate Games will show Lagos's readiness for major sporting events.
"Hosting the National Intermediate Games gives us the chance to showcase Lagos as fully prepared for any competition. By mid-September, this facility will come alive again, ready to host over 12,000 athletes and officials. It will be a huge celebration of sport," he added.
