Last season’s runners-up Lyon smashed Servette 8-0 in their women’s Champions League opener on Wednesday. This win showed they are serious about defending their title. Meanwhile, holders Barcelona defeated Paris FC 5-2.
France attacker Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored three goals against the Swiss champions. Her teammate Melchie Dumornay also scored twice in the match.
Dumornay helped set the tone by contributing to an own goal from Laia Balleste. Magdalena Sobal also scored an own goal for Servette. Midfielder Ines Benyahia added the eighth goal just before the end of the match for Lyon, who rested many key players.
“We wanted to start in the best way possible,” Dumornay told UEFA. “I’m very happy because we worked a lot together for this result and to avoid conceding a goal,” she added.
Later in the day, Barcelona kicked off their title defense with a strong performance. Poland attacker Ewa Pajor scored two goals as they aimed for a fifth Champions League title.
Brazil forward Kerolin, Spain’s Clara Serrajordi, and Norway’s Caroline Hansen also found the net for the Catalan side. They faced a big loss as two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas moved to London City Lionesses over the summer.
