The MacArthur Foundation, Dataphyte, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently held a forum for stakeholders. The goal was to promote inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) development in Nigeria. This event brought together policymakers, academics, industry leaders, and civil society groups. They discussed how AI technology affects different sectors and the need for its development to be fair for everyone.
At the forum, experts talked about the need for a strong framework. This framework should cover ethical issues, rules, and how AI might affect jobs and social structures. They pointed out that AI could boost economic growth and innovation. But it also has real risks if not handled well.
Dr. Abiola Afolabi from the MacArthur Foundation spoke about their commitment. She said the foundation supports efforts that promote responsible AI development. "We believe that AI should serve the interests of all Nigerians, and it is crucial that we engage diverse voices in shaping its future," she said.
The participants also focused on education and skill-building. They want to make sure the workforce has the right skills for an AI-driven economy. They called for partnerships between schools and the tech industry. This way, they can create courses that match the changing job market needs.
The forum ended with a strong call to action. They urged stakeholders to work together on policies that ensure transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in AI development. The organizers were hopeful that these discussions would lead to real steps toward a fairer technological environment in Nigeria.
