The Kaduna State Police have arrested a man named Manaseh Bitrus Jatau for the murder of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah. This happened after a fight over a phone call from another woman.
Jeremiah’s body was discovered on Mai Angwa Street in Romi, Kaduna, around 7am on Saturday, September 5, 2026, according to police reports.
Mansir Hassan, the police Public Relations Officer, shared this information in a statement on Friday. He said the Officer-in-Charge of the Romi Outstation reported the discovery.
Hassan stated, “The lifeless body of the deceased was sighted along Mai Angwa Street, Romi, with cotton wool stuffed in her nose.”
The police quickly took Jeremiah to St Gerald Hospital in Kakuri, Kaduna. A doctor there confirmed she was dead. Hassan added that her body has been kept in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
Initial investigations revealed that Jatau was the last person to speak with Jeremiah. He had invited her to meet him at Ebano Joint in Romi. Hassan said, “The suspect was subsequently traced and arrested at his place of work, Tomato Jos Company, Maraban Jos Area, Kaduna.”
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to fighting with Jeremiah in his room over a phone call from another woman. The PPRO stated, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to having had a fight with the deceased in his room over a phone call from another lady, which resulted in her death.”
Hassan also quoted Jatau’s confession about dumping Jeremiah’s body in an open field near his home to cover up the crime. He said, “He further confessed to have dumped the body in an open field close to his house in an attempt to conceal the crime.”
Jatau is now in police custody as detectives continue looking into the details surrounding the woman’s death. Hassan said the suspect would be taken to court once the investigation is complete.
The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, condemned all acts of violence. He urged the public to resolve disputes peacefully. Muhammad assured residents of “the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and bringing perpetrators to book.”
He also called on the public to help security agencies by sharing useful information that could help prevent violence and crime in the state.
