The Ekiti State Police have arrested a man named Sunday Olawale for allegedly sharing fake news about a bandit attack in Are Ekiti, located in the Irepodun Ifelodun Local Government area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, shared this news in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday. He said the suspect admitted to the crime but could not explain why he spread the false information.
Abutu said, "The Police Command wishes to reiterate that there was no bandit invasion in Are Ekiti or any part of the Ekiti State."
The statement revealed that on June 14, 2026, the Command's Rapid Response Squad tracked down and arrested Sunday Olawale in the Ekute area of Ado Ekiti. He was charged with cyberstalking and spreading false information that could disrupt public peace.
It was noted that on June 12, 2026, a video went viral on social media claiming that bandits had attacked Are Ekiti. This video was later found to be untrue.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to sharing the false information online but could not provide a good reason for his actions.
The State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, warned that the Command will not accept any form of fake news or content that could cause panic among the public. He also urged people to verify any information they see or share on social media.
