The Federal Government has said that maritime crimes are serious threats to trade and investment in Nigeria. The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, shared this information during a meeting with stakeholders in Lagos. He stressed the need for everyone to work together to fight these crimes.

Sambo pointed out that pirates, oil thieves, and other criminals in the maritime sector are hurting the country’s economy. He said these crimes not only put the lives of seafarers at risk but also scare away foreign investors in shipping and maritime businesses.

The Minister called for a strong maritime security plan that includes different groups like the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and other important agencies. He said that a safe maritime environment is key to boosting trade and bringing in investment.

Sambo also encouraged stakeholders to use new strategies and technologies to watch over and protect Nigeria’s waters. He repeated the government's promise to make sure the maritime environment is safe and secure, which would help trade and support economic growth.

The meeting also discussed the need for regular training and skill development for people involved in maritime security. This training aims to prepare them to handle new threats effectively.
