American lifestyle expert and TV star, Martha Stewart, has said sorry after getting a lot of backlash for dressing as a homeless person for Halloween.
The 85-year-old caused a stir when she posted a picture of herself in ripped jeans, a black hat, and makeup that made her look dirty. She was holding a sign that said, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”
She shared the photo on Instagram on October 31, but deleted it later after people on social media accused her of making fun of homelessness and poverty.
CNN reported on Sunday that Stewart said the costume was meant to raise awareness about homelessness. She called it “one of America’s greatest challenges.”
In a statement to Page Six on Sunday, she said, “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.”
She also mentioned that she cares a lot about homelessness and has worked hard to support charities tackling the crisis.
Apology and Acknowledgment
But hours later, Stewart posted another message on Instagram, admitting that her first response wasn't enough.
“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough.
“I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry,” she wrote.
The uproar also got more attention because the photo was shared alongside promotional content for her QVC candle collection.
Many social media users criticized her costume. One person called it “grotesque, disgusting, morally bankrupt, incredibly wrong,” while another asked why she would choose to portray homelessness as a Halloween costume.
Stewart, who has built a business empire through TV shows, cookbooks, magazines, and home products, is seen as one of America's top lifestyle figures.
She has written over 100 books and won several Daytime Emmy Awards throughout her career.
