Cyclists in Lagos teamed up with the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and road safety officials to call for safer roads and better treatment for bicycle users. This event was part of activities for the 2026 World Bicycle Day.
The cyclists rode through key areas of the state. They promoted cycling as a safe, cheap, and eco-friendly way to get around. They also pushed for better roads for cyclists.
The rally was organized by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria along with FT Cycle Care and the Federal Road Safety Corps. It started at the National Stadium in Surulere, going through Anthony, Obanikoro, Maryland, and Ojodu Berger, before ending at the FRSC office in Lagos.
At the event, Femi Thomas, a board member of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, said the celebration aimed to encourage more people to use bicycles. He also wanted to raise awareness among other road users about cyclists' rights.
"This is part of the edition where we come around to the Federal Road Safety in order to acknowledge and celebrate this day with them and likewise reaching out to different clubs, different communities and different bicycle enthusiasts to come together and unite to do this advocacy ride so we can educate other road users what cycling is all about and how they can accept us and create room for us to ride on the road being safe," Thomas said.
He pointed out that cycling is a good way to travel and a source of income for many. He stressed that the public needs to accept cyclists more on Nigerian roads.
Kehinde Hamzat, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, also spoke. He urged cyclists to follow traffic rules and asked the government to create road infrastructure that works for bicycle riders.
"Look at the law establishing the safety of riding a bike, then we talk of the road, they should as well give right and ensure they donβt abuse the use of road. And we admonish the government to try and consider cyclists when they are constructing roads, such that it will accommodate the cyclists," Hamzat said.
The 2026 World Bicycle Day was celebrated worldwide with the theme, "Boosting Urban Life with the Bicycle." This theme focused on cycling as a real solution to traffic jams, pollution, and other city transportation problems.
People at the event agreed that more investment in cycling infrastructure and safety measures could inspire more individuals to ride bikes. This would help improve public health and support sustainable growth in cities.
