A much-anticipated rematch between boxing stars Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao has been delayed for an unknown time. Pacquiao's team in the Philippines shared this news on Friday.
This comes after ESPN reported that a Mayweather exhibition planned in Greece was cancelled. This happened because an events company tied to the Pacquiao fight tried to block it with a legal action.
Mayweather and Pacquiao, both Hall of Famers, have been in a disagreement since Mayweather shocked fans. He announced that a rematch set for September, which Netflix had promoted, would be just an exhibition. Pacquiao strongly disagreed with this.
On Friday, Pacquiao's camp released a statement. They said the delay was due to "a volatile mix of federal lawsuits, scheduling overbooks, and financial gridlock completely surrounding the Mayweather camp.”
The events company, CSI, filed a lawsuit against Mayweather last week. They are trying to get back at least $4.65 million. This amount was paid to Mayweather for exclusive rights to promote the Pacquiao rematch and another exhibition fight with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson that did not happen.
According to the statement from Pacquiao's team, the earliest a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather could happen now is early 2027.
"If Mayweather and CSI can settle their contract issues outside of court, promoters will immediately move to set a new date for the postponed exhibition fight between Mayweather and Mike Tyson, aiming for September 12," the statement said.
Mayweather, 49, retired from boxing in 2017 with an unbeaten record of 50 wins and 0 losses.
He was supposed to fight an exhibition against Greek kickboxing star Mike Zambidis on Saturday. This event was set to take place at the Telekon Centre in the OAKA Olympic Complex in Athens.
The planned Pacquiao bout would have brought the two fighters back together for what is known as the biggest money-making fight in boxing history.
