France captain Kylian Mbappe has called Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla a "despicable woman" for her racist remarks about him after France's World Cup win over Paraguay.
Mbappe shared his thoughts on his X account on Monday. He accused Amarilla of being racist and said her comments took attention away from Paraguay's World Cup performance.
"Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition."
He added, "Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country."
Mbappe continued, "I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world."
On Saturday, France beat Paraguay 1-0 in the World Cup round of 16 in Philadelphia. Mbappe scored the only goal from the penalty spot.
The match had its share of heated moments. After the final whistle, there was a confrontation between Mbappe and Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill. The situation escalated when Gill threw the ball at Mbappe.
Amarilla responded to the incident with a series of racist posts targeting Mbappe on her X account. She wrote, "The brute didn’t even learn to write; instead of mother’s milk, he sucked on coconuts, and the most educated thing he heard were chimpanzees."
She also claimed Gill should have shown Mbappe "the finger."
In another post, Amarilla referred to Mbappe as a "colonised Cameroonian, pretending hard to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly." She went on to say he looked "nervous and scared to death" during the match.
France secured their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals after the 1-0 win over Paraguay in a tough Round of 16 match at Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday, July 4.
Mbappe's penalty in the 70th minute came after a VAR review decided that Paraguay’s Diego Gomez tripped Desire Doue in the box. This goal marked Mbappe's 19th World Cup goal in 19 matches, putting him just one behind Argentina’s Lionel Messi on the all-time list. It was also his seventh goal of the tournament, keeping him level with Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
