History seems to be on the side of Lionel Messi and Argentina. The current champions began their World Cup title defense on June 16, following a trend seen in three of the last four tournaments.

Argentina won 3-0 against Algeria in their first Group J match at Kansas City Stadium. Messi scored all three goals, marking a fantastic personal achievement.

This result has brought back discussions about a strange pattern. Teams that play their first match on June 16 have often gone on to win the tournament.

In South Africa 2010, Spain played their first match on June 16 against Switzerland, and they ended up winning the trophy. Four years later, Germany started their campaign on the same date in Brazil against Portugal and also became champions.

The trend continued in Russia 2018 when France’s first match was on June 16 against Australia, leading them to victory in the tournament.

Qatar 2022 broke this pattern, but it returned this year with Argentina following suit. Messi was the star of the show against Algeria. He scored first in the first half and added two more goals in the second half, achieving his first World Cup hat-trick.

At 38 years old, Messi made history as the first player to compete in six World Cups. He tied with Germany’s Miroslav Klose with 16 World Cup goals, the all-time record, and became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the tournament.

After the match, Messi shared his thoughts on the win. "To enjoy this with my family, with my teammates, the ones who are always there, is a really beautiful moment. The squad, it’s a very united, very strong group. I feel good; we were lucky enough to win a tough match. It’s important to start off with a win in the first game," Messi said.

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, praised Messi’s performance. "I don’t have the words to describe Messi. For 20 years, he’s had us used to seeing things like this and he inspires everyone who watches him play," Scaloni said.

Argentina came into the tournament as favorites according to many experts. Messi’s brilliant display against Algeria has only made that belief stronger. If history keeps repeating itself, Scaloni’s team might add another World Cup title to their achievements.
