Lionel Messi returned to action in Major League Soccer on Saturday. He came on in the second half as his Inter Miami team drew 2-2 with Columbus Crew.

Two weeks after Argentina lost to Spain in the World Cup final, Messi stepped back onto the pitch. He entered the game in the 53rd minute to the joy of fans at Miami’s Nu Stadium.

But Messi could not score in this match. He missed two chances by shooting wide.

Uruguayan player Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Miami in the 16th minute. This was his seventh goal in four games.

In the 34th minute, Miami’s midfielder Casemiro, who played for Manchester United and Real Madrid, scored an own goal. This brought Columbus back to level at 1-1.

Suarez assisted Noah Allen, who headed the ball into the net to give Miami a 2-1 lead at half-time.

In the 84th minute, midfielder Brais Mendez scored a free-kick to equalize for Columbus. This was his first game for Columbus after moving from Real Sociedad in Spain.

The draw ended Miami’s winning streak at six matches. They remain in second place in the Eastern Conference behind Nashville, who also drew 2-2 against DC United.

In the Western Conference, Los Angeles FC and Vancouver Whitecaps are still tied at the top. They drew 1-1 at Vancouver’s BC Place.

Son Heung-min scored for Los Angeles in the 37th minute. This made it four goals in four matches since the MLS resumed after the World Cup.

Vancouver’s Thomas Mueller equalized for his team by converting a penalty in the 76th minute.
