Lionel Messi did not play after his father passed away. Inter Miami lost 2-1 to Monterrey in a Leagues Cup match on Saturday.

Before the game started, both teams held a minute of silence for Jorge Messi, who died at age 68 in Argentina. Lionel Messi arrived in Argentina on Saturday night to be with his family.

Inter Miami expressed their support, saying, "Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family."

Rodrigo De Paul, an Argentine midfielder, put Miami ahead in the 32nd minute. This gave Miami a 1-0 lead at half-time against the Mexican team.

De Paul took off his number seven shirt to reveal a number 10 shirt underneath. This was a show of support for Messi during this tough time.

In the second half, Belgian striker Hugo Cuypers scored for Monterrey in the 47th minute. Then, in the last minute of the game, Uruguayan striker Diego Rossi scored the winning goal for Monterrey.

Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer champions, had previously won their first group match 4-2 against Atletico San Luis. They will play against Leon on Wednesday.
