Defending champion Emmanuel Micheal will face unseeded Jimoh Joseph in the second semi-final of the men’s singles at the ongoing 47th Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Tennis Championship. The last-four matches in all categories will take place on Friday at the Tennis Courts of Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Micheal, who is the third seed in the tournament, has made it to the semi-finals along with top seed Abua Canice. Canice will compete against Yusuf Abubakar in the other semi-final match. The winners of both matches will move on to Saturday’s final.
In the women’s singles, top seed Mohammed Khadijat will play against Ogunjobi Success in the first semi-final. Second seed Emmanuel Essien Bright will take on fifth seed Bassey Etoro in the second semi-final. Khadijat got here by defeating Godwin Favour with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Success also won her match against Udofia Mary in straight sets, finishing 6-2, 6-0.
In the men’s singles wheelchair category, Ajani Idowu won a tough match against Odunuga Pelumi. The final score was 2-4, 5-4, 10-3. In the women's wheelchair singles, defending champion Usoh Andrea will compete against top seed Nwaozuzu Chituru and three other players in matches set for later today.
The men’s and women’s doubles events have reached the semi-final stage as well. Notable pairings include John David and Jimoh Joseph, Akagha Samuel and Uwandu Charles, along with Micheal Emmanuel and Sylvanus Ajano. Abua Canice and Mohammed Musa are considered among the best duos in the men’s category. In the women’s doubles, top seeds Ogunjobi Success and Mohammed Khadijat have booked their spots in the semi-finals. They will be joined by second seeds Suwa Nenrot and Omotayo Blessing, as well as Udofia Mary and Bamidele Abosede and Godwin Favour with Kwange Emmanuella.
Meanwhile, second seed Adeleye Daniel has pulled out of the championship. He had already qualified for the semi-finals but decided to compete in an international tournament in Italy. He left Nigeria on Friday morning through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
