Morocco and Senegal Face Off in Key Group A Match

Hosts Morocco aim to finish their Group A campaign on a high note when they play Senegal in their last group-stage match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Monday evening. The Lionesses of Teranga need a win to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.

Kick-off is set for 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT).

This match reignites a fierce rivalry in African football. Morocco and Senegal met in the controversial final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal won that match 1-0 after extra time in Rabat. However, CAF’s Appeals Board later overturned the result, giving Morocco a 3-0 victory after deciding Senegal forfeited the final due to a temporary walk-off in protest over a penalty decision.

This case is still being appealed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), so there is a lot of history and emotion when these teams clash.

According to PUNCH Online, this match is seen as a highlight of the group phase, especially after Morocco earned six points from their first two matches. "Some group stage matches feel like knockout games. The clash between Morocco and Senegal on Monday evening at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat falls into this category," CAF said in its match preview.

The Atlas Lionesses began their campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Kenya and followed that with a narrow 1-0 victory against Algeria to secure their place in the knockout rounds. Senegal bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Algeria by defeating Kenya 1-0 and is still in the race for qualification.

The official preview states, "Hosts Morocco, who have already secured their place in the knockout stage, face Senegal in their final Group A match at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Monday, 3 August, with kick-off at 21h00 local time (20h00 GMT)."

This will be the third meeting between Senegal and Morocco in WAFCON history. Both teams have met in three consecutive editions of the finals. Morocco has won both previous matches 1-0, with Ghizlane Chebbak scoring from the penalty spot in 2022 and Yasmin M’Rabet converting another penalty in first-half stoppage time last year.

CAF also highlighted that "when the teams were paired together in 2022, and at the last edition, both progressed beyond the group stage."

This time, Senegal's route to qualification is more complex. "For both teams to advance this time, Senegal needs to win while Algeria must not beat Kenya," the preview explained.

Morocco coach Jorge Vilda downplayed the impact of history on Monday's match, despite last year’s close win over Senegal. Vilda said, "These are two completely different situations. Senegal is a great team on the African and even global stage. We will have to show the best version of Morocco."

Even though Morocco is already through to the knockout stage, they believe there is still a lot at stake. "It’s neither a dead rubber match nor an easy one. It’s a mini-final. In this WAFCON, all the teams have improved. We must stay focused on our game," said Morocco international Sakina Ouzraoui.

The hosts are also counting on their fans for support to help them secure another victory. "Our supporters are our twelfth player. We want to repay their pride by winning," Ouzraoui added.

Vilda expects a full stadium in Rabat. He mentioned, "All the tickets are sold out. If the stadium were bigger, it would be just as full. We want to offer a victory to those in the stands as well as those watching on television."

Senegal coach Mame Moussa Cissé said his team has bounced back strongly from their opening defeat and is confident going into this key match. "We approach every match with confidence, humility and the desire to achieve a positive result. After our first defeat, we found the mental, physical and tactical resources to react. Today, our qualification depends on us," Cissé said.

Cissé also dismissed any comparisons with past encounters. He said, "Football evolves. Circumstances change. The two teams are now very evenly matched in terms of level. It’s up to each of them to write their own story. The Moroccan crowd is a hurdle."

He recognized the challenge of playing against the host nation. He said, "Playing against the hosts is always difficult. But these are the matches every player dreams of playing. We’ll have to ignore the atmosphere and stay focused on our own game."

Looking past the result, Cissé said this match would showcase women's football in Africa. He emphasized, "Beyond Morocco and Senegal, it’s African women’s football that will be under scrutiny. This will be one of the most-watched matches of the competition. Everyone will have to rise to the occasion."

Statistics show Morocco's recent strength. The hosts are unbeaten in their last eight WAFCON group-stage matches, with seven wins and one draw. They have not conceded a goal in this tournament after wins over Kenya and Algeria. A victory would mean Morocco wins all three group matches for the second time after doing so in 2022.

For Senegal, a win would mean back-to-back WAFCON victories for only the second time and could send them to the knockout stage for a third consecutive time if Algeria fails to beat Kenya. Senegal also aims to break a poor record, having never won, scored or avoided defeat in a third WAFCON group-stage match.
