Moses Itauma will make his comeback in early 2027, according to his promoter Frank Warren.
Itauma was on the verge of becoming a heavyweight star. But he faced a big challenge and lost in his first attempt for a world title against Filip Hrgovic.
The young British boxer was stopped by the Croatian fighter after he ran out of energy by the ninth round. He was taken to the hospital after being carried out of the ring, but he has recovered well.
Warren mentioned that Itauma's comeback will start next year, but there will be some changes. "He’s going to fight very early next year, I’ve spoken to him a few times," he told iFL TV.
"He’s actually back in the gym. I’m going to sit down with the team in the next week. Now the dust is settled, we can all speak calmly and clearly. He’s very disappointed. He knows what he did wrong. And as I’ve said from the start, there has got to be some serious changes."
Itauma now has some tough decisions ahead as he tries to rebuild after his first loss in a major fight. The boxer from Chatham has faced calls to separate from his trainer Ben Davison. Many people criticized Davison for his role in Itauma's defeat.
However, some believe Itauma lacked experience and needed more time before facing Hrgovic. It seems he will have to go back to the basics, with fights likely at a lower level to rebuild his reputation.
talkSPORT Boxing’s Paul Smith thinks the 21-year-old can still dominate the division but must learn from his defeat. He said on talkBOXING, "After watching that fight, I’d put my house on Moses dominating the division and becoming a champion."
"But I think he just lacked physical fitness, and needed someone to say to him, ‘slow it down and take some off.’ It just suited Hrgovic perfectly because he was unloading with no regard for what was coming back.
