The Nigerian Navy has arrested three suspects linked to the damage of the Oando-Ondewari pipeline in Bayelsa State.
This was announced in a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, on Friday in Abuja.
Captain Folorunsho said the suspects were caught by personnel of Operation DELTA SENTINEL for allegedly vandalising the Oando-Ondewari pipeline at Ogboinbiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
He mentioned that the arrest followed a joint intelligence-led operation by naval personnel and a private pipeline surveillance outfit after reports of a deliberate breach along the pipeline corridor.
A later inspection confirmed that the pipeline had been damaged, leading to crude oil spilling which posed a threat to important national energy infrastructure.
According to him, acting on reliable intelligence, naval personnel raided a suspected hideout in Ondewari community in the early hours of June 12, leading to the capture of three suspects.
"Preliminary investigations showed the suspects’ involvement in the act of vandalism, while further inquiries revealed that a fourth suspect is still on the run."
Captain Folorunsho said the operation highlighted the navy’s commitment to protecting crucial oil and gas infrastructure. He added that they are determined to stop economic saboteurs from harming Nigeria’s economic interests through vandalism and sabotage.
He also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to catch the fleeing suspect and wrap up investigations.
"Once the investigation is complete, the arrested suspects will be handed over to the right agency for further investigation and prosecution in line with existing laws," he said.
The naval spokesperson reaffirmed the navy’s dedication to continuing intelligence-driven operations under Operation DELTA SENTINEL to protect key national assets, reduce crude oil theft, and ensure the safety of Nigeria’s maritime and energy sectors.
