Trabzonspor has named Thomas Reis as their new head coach. He is a former teammate of Nigerian football legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha. Reis will be responsible for Nigerian players Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu, along with Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.
The Turkish club announced this news on Thursday. Reis replaces Fatih Tekke, who stepped down earlier this month.
The 52-year-old German played with Okocha at Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1990s. They appeared in 10 matches together across all competitions. Okocha became one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers, while Reis shifted to coaching after his playing days.
Reis is returning to Turkey after a successful time with Samsunspor from 2024 to 2026. He left that club in February and took over Bulgarian team Ludogorets in July, but his time there was short.
This change comes at a crucial time for Onuachu. He is trying to secure a key position at Trabzonspor after making his transfer permanent in 2025 from his initial loan.
Onuachu recently suffered an injury during a match against Gençlerbirliği. Because of this, he was not included in manager Chelle’s squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Meanwhile, Nwaiwu made it into the squad. He will compete for his spot under the new coach. Nwaiwu hopes to impress both Reis and the Super Eagles.
