The Nigerian government wants to improve its relationship with Israel. They are focusing on areas like agriculture, security, defense, entertainment, education, and healthcare. This is part of Nigeria's plan to grow its economy.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, shared this when he met the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Abuja.
Mr Akume talked about Nigeria's vast potential. He highlighted the country's large arable land, big population, and rich natural resources, including oil. He believes that with the right partnerships and investments, Nigeria can become a key player in food production, technology, education, and healthcare.
Recalling his visits to Israel, the SGF praised the country for its achievements despite tough conditions. He admired Israel's progress in healthcare, education, agriculture, and technology. He called Israel a symbol of resilience and smart development.
During the visit, Ambassador Michael Freeman described Nigeria as a nation full of blessings and opportunities. He pointed out the similarities between Nigeria and Israel. The ambassador noted how Israel turned desert areas into productive farms using advanced irrigation and innovative farming.
He expressed Israel's willingness to work with Nigeria to develop its agriculture. This partnership aims to increase food production and make Nigeria a major exporter of farm products. He stressed that strong political will and commitment are key to making this happen.
Mr Freeman mentioned that both Nigeria and Israel face similar security threats, especially terrorism. He said that terrorism is a global issue that needs a united approach. He wanted to learn more about Nigeria's needs in areas like troop training, cybersecurity, tracking illegal money, border security, and tactical operations to find ways to work together.
Adeyinka Famadewa, a Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Homeland Security, also spoke. He said that Nigeria and Israel share similar security problems. He noted that both countries deal with threats from terrorism and other security issues. Israel has developed advanced technology and security systems that could help Nigeria.
Mr Famadewa, who is a retired major general, highlighted the need for better intelligence sharing, capacity building, and specialized training between the two nations. He believes this will strengthen Nigeria’s security and help the country respond to new security threats.
