Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has accused Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s government in Delta State of not turning the state's large earnings into real development. He said the state has very little to show for over N3.15 trillion received in the past three years.
In an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday, Omo-Agege said the Oborevwori administration has not done enough with the huge resources available to them.
"Despite receiving over N3.15 trillion in three years, there’s nothing on the ground in Delta State other than three or four flyovers, as if flyovers are what governance is all about," he stated.
The former deputy Senate president also claimed that around N750 billion of Delta State funds are sitting idle with the Central Bank of Nigeria. He accused the government of being unable to use these funds to solve pressing problems in the state.
Omo-Agege Backs Peter Obi
His criticism comes as Omo-Agege officially announced his support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election. This follows his switch from the ruling APC to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
When asked who he would support for president in 2027, he said: "Of course, it’s Peter Obi of the NDC."
Omo-Agege added that supporting Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, does not mean he disagrees with the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu. This includes the removal of the fuel subsidy and changes to foreign exchange.
He said these policies were necessary and that Obi supports them, but Nigerians would trust their execution more under Obi’s leadership.
APC Abandoned Him
The former APC governorship candidate claimed the ruling party left him and his supporters in Delta State after Governor Oborevwori and his political team joined the APC.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that Governor Oborevwori said Omo-Agege's issues in politics come from a history of falling out with allies. He insisted that Omo-Agege is no longer a key player in Delta politics.
"I never left the APC. The APC left me and left my over 240,000 supporters in Delta State," Omo-Agege said.
Omo-Agege also reiterated his claim that he won the 2023 governorship election in Delta but was denied victory.
Although he ruled out running for governor in 2027, he said the NDC has chosen a candidate who can address insecurity, healthcare, poor education, and economic challenges in the oil-rich state.
Neither Governor Oborevwori nor the Delta State Government has publicly replied to Omo-Agege’s claims.
