Nigeria is leading Africa’s fresh effort to host the 2034 Commonwealth Games. The National Sports Commission is working hard to get the hosting rights for the continent and make Nigeria a strong candidate for the event, The PUNCH reports.
The NSC had put in a strong bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This would have marked 100 years since the event started, but India ended up winning the rights.
Abuja’s loss means Africa is still waiting to host the Commonwealth Games. There have been loud calls for the event to take place in Africa for the first time ever.
At the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting in Glasgow, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko pushed hard for Africa to be the exclusive host for the 2034 Games.
The Nigerian team was then invited to a key meeting with the Commonwealth Games Federation. They talked about how the 2034 hosting rights will be awarded.
“The resolutions reached at the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting in Glasgow are already yielding positive outcomes for Africa’s ambition to host the 2034 Commonwealth Games,” the NSC said in a statement on Sunday.
“After the meeting, where NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko advocated for Africa as the host of the 2034 Games, the Nigerian delegation was invited to a strategic meeting with the Commonwealth Games Federation.
“The talks looked at the pathways, timelines and requirements for awarding the hosting rights for the 2034 Commonwealth Games, after ministers decided that the Games should be held in Africa.
“This development is an important first step in turning the ministerial resolution into a solid process. Nigeria is now actively involved in talks about the continent’s hosting goals.”
Nigeria’s renewed effort comes after a strong showing by Team Nigeria at the recent 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The country competed in 10 sports with 72 athletes, winning 24 medals: 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze. They finished seventh on the medals table, making them the best-performing African nation at the Games.
