Nigeria is kicking off a program to make Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), known as cooking gas, more available across the country.

Government officials, industry leaders, community members, and women from Bayelsa gathered on Tuesday, 28 July, in Bayelsa State to launch the National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme. This program is part of Nigeria’s Decade of Gas project.

The goal of this program is to increase access to LPG and encourage families to switch to cleaner, safer, and more efficient cooking fuel.

As stated in the Decade of Gas, the Bayelsa launch marks the beginning of a rollout across states. This rollout will bring the advantages of clean cooking energy to communities nationwide.

The National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme aims to help Nigerian families move away from traditional fuels like firewood and charcoal to LPG. This shift is meant to improve public health, cut down on environmental damage, and support economic growth.

This initiative fits into the federal government’s plan to create a gas-powered economy. It aims to boost domestic gas use and improve energy access for everyone. The target is to reach 5 million Nigerian households with clean cooking options through LPG by 2030.

Partners in this program include Seplat Energy, ExxonMobil, NNPC, NLNG, Dangote Group, SPDC, and TotalEnergies, as stated on the Decade of Gas website.
