Nigeria to Host Commonwealth Fencing Championships in 2026

President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, believes that hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships from August 9 to 14 will boost interest in fencing across Nigeria.

Nigeria won the hosting rights after beating Australia. This means Nigeria will be the first African country to hold the senior event. Samuel called this a historic achievement.

He mentioned that Nigeria is becoming known for hosting world-class events like the FIE-sanctioned World Cup and African Championships. This shows that Nigeria can be trusted to host big tournaments.

Samuel said, “This is an opportunity to showcase our ability to host international competitions and to expand fencing into more schools and clubs across the country.” He added that the championships will also help attract long-term corporate partners to support youth development and improve sports facilities.

The championships are expected to bring in athletes from around 30 Commonwealth countries. This will help Lagos economy through hospitality, tourism, and entertainment.

Samuel highlighted that fencing is for everyone. He pointed out that competitors range from young people to veterans, with some as old as 86 set to join the competition.

“Fencing is a sport for all ages. It keeps you active and healthy, and this competition will highlight its longevity,” he explained.

The 2026 championships will also have some new features. There will be an under-23 category and wheelchair fencing, with medals for wheelchair fencers being awarded for the first time.

Nigeria will welcome wheelchair fencers from eight countries, showing its growing role in adaptive sports.

In partnership with World Ability Sports, Nigeria will set up an academy before the championships. This academy will train athletes, coaches, and referees in wheelchair fencing, making Nigeria a leader in this sport in Africa.

Samuel described the event as “something historical, not just for Nigeria but for Africa.” He stressed its importance in bringing Commonwealth nations together and increasing the visibility of fencing.
