The Commonwealth Fencing Federation believes Nigeria can successfully host the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships. They pointed to Nigeria's strong bid, good preparations, and the support structures in place for the tournament in Lagos this August, according to The PUNCH.

Nigeria will be the first African nation to host the senior edition of the championships. CFF President Marie-France Dufour said this shows Nigeria's readiness and the federation's faith in the growth of fencing in Africa.

Dufour explained that Nigeria won the right to host after being the strongest candidate in a tough selection process led by the CFF and approved by Commonwealth Sport.

"The hosting rights were awarded by Commonwealth Sport to the CFF, which then sought their sanction for our championships, as has been the practice in the past," Dufour said.

"The CFF has a strong, long-term partnership with Commonwealth Sport, which has always trusted our selection process. Nigeria’s bid was picked through this process, reflecting the spirit of the Commonwealth."

She mentioned that the CFF Board did careful checks before choosing Nigeria. They looked at many bids and assessed each candidate’s ability to meet the federation’s needs.

To make sure Nigeria is ready, Dufour said the CFF Technical Committee has held about 20 virtual meetings with local organisers. They also visited Lagos to check the site. Experienced championship organisers are helping with key areas, and international referees are already on board for the event.

The tournament is expected to bring together athletes from 16 countries. These include Australia, England, India, South Africa, Singapore, Ghana, and host Nigeria. The addition of an Under-23 category has also increased the number of participants ahead of the championships.

"The CFF is providing technical expertise and oversight throughout the process," Dufour added.

"We have checked competition logistics, referee resources, and registration systems. We are also working with World Para Fencing and Commonwealth Sport to make sure the event meets international standards."

Dufour said she is particularly excited to see the first senior Commonwealth Fencing Championships on African soil. She called it a historic moment for the sport and a great chance for Nigeria to show its ability to organise international events.
