Nigeria bagged 35 medals at the 2026 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championships held in Dakar, Senegal. The Nigeria Aquatics Federation called this the country’s best performance in over ten years at this event.
Team Nigeria ended the championship with 17 gold, 14 silver, and four bronze medals from both individual and relay events.
The Nigeria Aquatics Federation congratulated the junior and senior swimmers, along with the coaches and technical staff, for their outstanding performance at this continental competition.
NAqF President, Lekan Fatodu, stated that the medal count shows a big step forward for swimming in Nigeria. It also highlights the progress made in developing the sport.
“The performance of our swimmers in Dakar is a thing of great pride for Nigeria. Winning 35 medals, including 17 gold medals, is a significant achievement. It shows the commitment and hard work of our athletes, coaches, and the entire technical crew,” Fatodu said.
He also praised the junior swimmers for their efforts. He believes this success will motivate them as they prepare for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in Dakar from October 30 to November 13.
Fatodu mentioned that the championship helped the federation evaluate how far its young swimmers have come. It also gave them a chance to prepare for upcoming international events.
He added that the federation will keep working on its development programs. They want to improve athletes’ training and create more chances for Nigerian swimmers to compete at top levels.
The NAqF president is confident that the success in Dakar will help Nigeria's preparations for the Youth Olympic Games and other significant competitions.
The federation stated it will remain dedicated to building a strong group of swimmers who can compete successfully on both African and global stages.
