Nigerian footballers had a great weekend in Europe. Kelechi Iheanacho scored again in Turkey. Semi Ajayi put in a strong defensive performance for Hull City. Chidozie Awaziem scored two goals for Konyaspor.
Gift Orban and Olakunle Olusegun also found the net for their teams. David Okereke had a goal and two assists in Italy. In England, Alex Iwobi hit another Premier League milestone. Friday Etim kept up his good form in Denmark.
Iheanacho Keeps Scoring
Iheanacho was in the spotlight after scoring in Bursaspor's 4-2 win over Keçiörengücü in Turkey.
He now has 16 goals and three assists in 12 matches. This also means he has scored in 12 straight league games. The win pushed Bursaspor to the top of the Turkish 1. Lig table.
His scoring ability has made him one of the top Nigerian players abroad this season.
Ajayi Earns Double Recognition
Semi Ajayi also caught attention after helping Hull City draw 1-1 with Brentford at the MKM Stadium.
He played a key role in the Tigers' defense after their earlier loss to Fulham. Ajayi earned two Man of the Match awards for his effort.
"It’s important that we had a good bounce back from last week; we did that," Ajayi told Sky Sports after the game.
The defender won five out of six tackles, made four clearances, recorded five recoveries, and had two interceptions.
His performance earned him the Premier League Player of the Match award. He also topped Hull City’s Man of the Match poll with 43.6 percent of the votes, beating Oli McBurnie, Tim Iroegbunam, and Lewis Coyle.
Despite the recognition, Ajayi said Hull City was disappointed not to win.
"We are definitely disappointed not to come away with the three points, but a point at home is always positive," he added.
Awaziem Scores Twice
In Turkey, Awaziem had a standout performance, scoring two goals to help Konyaspor defeat Gençlerbirliği 2-0.
The Nigerian center-back scored first just before half-time. He added another goal early in the second half to seal the victory.
This brace was a big contribution from a defender and helped Konyaspor take all three points.
