The Nigerian Federation of American Football has announced that Nigeria’s men’s, women’s, and Under-13 national teams will compete at the 2026 NFL Flag Africa Continental Championship. The tournament will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 9 to 11.
This championship is the third NFL Flag continental event held in Africa. The previous editions were in Nigeria in 2024 and in Egypt in 2025.
This year, the competition will bring together men's and women's national teams from five countries. These countries are Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa. There will also be a co-ed Under-13 youth tournament with 10-player teams from each country.
A statement from the NFAF said, "As a new federation, we know we still have plenty to learn, but our players and coaches have put in the work to get ready for this competition. We are proud to represent Nigeria in Nairobi and to give our athletes this platform to compete and grow."
The event will happen in partnership with the NFL and is authorized by the International Federation of American Football. The Kenyan Federation of American Football is also providing local support.
Apart from the matches, there will be an NFL elite talent identification workout on July 11. This is a chance for athletes to be assessed by NFL representatives as part of the league’s NFL Africa programme.
The NFAF is excited about this opportunity and looks forward to building on the experience. They aim to keep growing flag football in Nigeria. Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide and will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
