The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) is moving closer to launching a digital postcode system for the country. They recently validated a model that will give every addressable building in Nigeria a unique digital address.

This validation was announced on Monday in Abuja. It is part of NIPOST's plan to create a reliable and technology-driven addressing system that will improve service delivery, logistics, emergency response, and national planning.

At the Post Code Delineation Model Validation 2026 event, Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster-General and CEO of NIPOST, said this initiative will produce machine-readable addresses for buildings in Nigeria. "Postcode is basically a framework used to have a machine-readable standard location address for every addressable building in Nigeria," Ms Odeyemi said.

She explained that the system will assign a unique code to every building in the country. This puts Nigeria among a few African countries aiming to implement such detailed postcode identification.

According to her, this validation exercise is important to ensure that postcode boundaries reflect the real geography and administrative areas across Nigeria.

Tackling Nigeria's Location Issues

Nigeria has had ongoing problems with an unreliable addressing system. This makes it hard to identify locations for postal services, emergency responses, security operations, logistics, and public planning.

Ms Odeyemi pointed out that Nigeria's different geographical areas need various approaches to address mapping and postcode allocation. "Nigeria is a large country. We have all the way from the top of Nigeria, which is almost like the Sahel, to the Savannah, to the Middle Belt, to the tropical South and even to the riverine areas," she said.

She added, "The logic that will work for Jigawa is not the same logic that will work for Bayelsa because they have completely different geographical expressions, density of buildings, population distribution and topography."

She also mentioned that the delineation process aims to ensure postcode boundaries match existing administrative structures and do not cross local government areas. "Delineation has to make sure the postcode does not pass administrative boundaries, and it must not go across two local government areas," she noted.

Checking Digital Maps

According to Ms Odeyemi, the validation process will include testing maps created from the air against what is really on the ground. This will confirm that building density, settlement patterns, and geographical features are accurately represented in different states.

"To test the polygons we have drawn aerially, we must ensure they accurately reflect realities on the ground," she said. She gave the example of the differences in settlement density between areas like Mushin in Lagos and parts of Abuja to show why specific validation is needed.

Rollout Expected This Year

The validation exercise is part of a larger federal effort to set up a national digital addressing system. Earlier on Monday, Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, announced that the first phase of the digital postcode rollout will start in October.

Speaking at another workshop on implementing the Nigerian Digital Postcode for National Security and Public Safety in Abuja, the minister said this project will give every building in the country, even in rural areas, a unique digital address.

He mentioned that this initiative will help security agencies, improve emergency response, strengthen identity verification systems, and boost e-commerce activities. Mr Tijani described the digital postcode as essential national infrastructure that will solve long-standing issues related to inaccurate address identification.

He pointed out that lacking a reliable addressing system has made crime investigations, emergency dispatch operations, and efforts to verify identities and locations much harder. The minister said this project is part of a larger investment in digital infrastructure meant to enhance connectivity, public services, and economic growth across Nigeria.

For NIPOST, this validation exercise is a big step towards creating a national addressing system that will support government services, business operations, and public safety.
