The National Centre Managers’ Forum (NCMF) of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in Kaduna has kicked off a one-month warning strike. This strike began on Monday, 12 October, because of unpaid allowances that date back to 2020.
The strike, which started on Monday, 12 October, will last until 12 November. This information is from a notice signed by the forum’s National Chairman, Tam Frank, and National Secretary, Mamuda Doguwa.
The notice was shared with PREMIUM TIMES. It directed centre managers who oversee NTI study centres across Nigeria to stop all activities related to the institute’s programmes.
The forum said they reached this decision after several failed attempts to get their unpaid allowances. “Despite our persistent efforts and engagements with the appropriate authorities, the outstanding payments remain unsettled, with no tangible response or concrete commitment to resolving the matter,” the notice states.
“Consequently, following repeated demands from our members across the nation and the resolution reached at the NCMF leadership meeting held on 8 October, 2026, the leadership has been left with no option but to declare a one-month warning strike to press home our legitimate demands.”
Unpaid Allowances
The forum stated that its members are owed allowances for the first and second semesters of each year from 2020 to 2025, along with the first semester of 2026. They mentioned that they wrote to the NTI management on 13 July and held talks with officials at the institute’s headquarters, but the payments are still not made.
According to the notice, the failure to fix this issue led to the decision to halt activities across NTI programmes nationwide. The affected programmes include the Pivotal Teacher Training Programme (PTTP), Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), Bachelor’s Degree Programmes (BDPs), and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
Members were also told to stop project supervision and teaching practice arrangements. They were advised not to attend virtual or physical meetings arranged by state or zonal offices.
The forum encouraged members to use its official communication channels for updates during the strike.
Possibility of Indefinite Strike
Even with the ongoing strike, the forum said it is still open to serious talks with the relevant authorities. They warned that they would start preparing for an indefinite strike if their demands are not met by the end of this one-month warning strike.
The Director-General of NTI, Sadiya Daura, a professor, did not answer calls or text messages asking for comments on the situation at the time of this report.
