Nigeria’s promising tennis player Oluwaseun Ogunsakin will be back on the court at the US Open Junior Championships on Tuesday. He will face South Africa’s Connor Doig in the round of 32 of the boys’ singles event.
Ogunsakin made it to this round after a fantastic comeback against 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen from Chinese Taipei. He won that match 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. This victory marked Ogunsakin’s first win in the main draw of a Grand Slam junior tournament.
The 17-year-old is excited to build on his success as he prepares to take on Doig, who is ranked No. 42 in the tournament’s ITF acceptance list.
Ogunsakin’s journey in New York follows a strong qualifying round. He beat Poland’s Tymon Litwic with a score of 6-3, 6-0. He then shocked Canada’s top seed Felix Roussel 6-3, 6-4 to secure his spot in the 64-player main draw.
Looking Ahead
This US Open is part of an encouraging Grand Slam season for Ogunsakin. He previously competed at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, reaching the boys’ singles main draw and the doubles semi-finals at both events.
Ogunsakin also took part in the doubles event at Flushing Meadows with Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin. They were unfortunately knocked out in the round of 32 after losing 6-3, 6-4 to Ryo Tabata from Japan and Yannick Alexandrescu from France.
Now, Ogunsakin is focused on his singles match as he aims to continue his impressive run and reach the Round of 16.
The US Open Junior Championships will take place from September 6 to 12, with singles draws for both boys and girls featuring 64 players each.
For Ogunsakin, winning against Doig would highlight his quick rise in the international junior tennis scene. It would also bring him closer to making a significant run at this year’s final Grand Slam.
The Nigerian teenager is looking to follow in the footsteps of former US Open junior champions like Andy Murray (2004), Andy Roddick (2000), and Lindsay Davenport (1992), who all went on to win the main title later in their careers.
