Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and Nigerian keeper Arthur Okonkwo both had great games for their clubs over the weekend. Okonkwo helped Charlton Athletic win in his debut match, while Okoye secured a point for Udinese in Serie A, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Okonkwo was named man of the match in his first game for Charlton. He made eight saves as the Championship team beat West Ham 2-1 in the EFL on Saturday. The 24-year-old joined Charlton on a season-long loan from Wrexham just 48 hours before the game, but he showed no nerves. He organized his defense well and kept West Ham's attackers at bay.
His move came after Wrexham decided not to include him in their plans for the new season. Last season, Okonkwo helped Wrexham in their playoff push, making 39 appearances, recording 114 saves, and keeping nine clean sheets.
In Italy, Okoye made five key saves to help Udinese draw 1-1 with Como, who are aiming for the Champions League. This was Udinese's first point of the season after finishing tenth last year.
Udinese scored first in the 29th minute. Hassane Kamara lifted the ball over goalkeeper Jean Butez after receiving a nice pass inside the box.
Como equalized early in the second half. Anastasios Douvikas scored from close range after getting a rebound.
Okoye received praise from his manager for keeping a clean sheet in the Coppa Italia. He could not stop the equalizer but was still impressive, making five saves to ensure Udinese did not lose their first home game of the season.
The strong performances from both goalkeepers are good news for Nigeria. Okonkwo is making a name for himself in English football, while Okoye is showing his value to Udinese after returning to the club.
