Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is not at the World Cup, but the 2026 tournament has made him a star. After playing in a friendly match against Portugal, the 26-year-old Udinese goalkeeper has become a global internet sensation. He has caught the attention of celebrities like American music legend Toni Braxton and BBC actress Sarah Hadland. Okoye has won over millions of female fans without playing a single minute in the competition, PETER AKINBO writes.

Nigeria might not be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but one of their players has become one of the most talked-about names at the tournament. Maduka Okoye, the Super Eagles goalkeeper who plays club football for Udinese in Italy’s Serie A, has taken over the internet in a way that even the biggest stars at the tournament have struggled to match.

The attention has come from all over the world, reaching celebrities like Toni Braxton and Sarah Hadland, and this has left the 26-year-old goalkeeper genuinely speechless.

It all kicked off on June 10 during a pre-tournament friendly between Nigeria and Portugal in Leiria. Nigeria lost 2-1, and Okoye made four saves in 90 minutes. But that did not matter to the internet.

What mattered was the pre-match presentation. Broadcast cameras showed the Nigerian squad and focused on the tall, light-skinned goalkeeper with the sharp jawline and tattooed arms. Social media users across four continents lost their composure.

Phrases like “Dear readers, I am pleased to inform you that we are witnessing the diamond of the season,” “Block me, I am married,” and “When does Nigeria play?” spread across platforms within hours of the match. This contributed to what became one of the most unexpected viral moments of the entire 2026 World Cup.

The funniest part was the answer to that last question, Nigeria is not playing. The Super Eagles were knocked out in the African play-off against the Democratic Republic of Congo, who won on penalties.

A social media post by the X account @blackishpress that tracked the viral reaction got over 3.8 million views, 43,000 likes, and 3,600 saves within a day.

A follow-up post showed photos of Okoye without a shirt, revealing tattoos on his arms, chest, and back, and reactions intensified even more.

One X user, Matthias Schmidt, expressed how many men felt when he said, “Delete this please, my wife is on this app.” Another user sighed, “Maduka Okoye always goes viral for this lol,” showing this was not new for the goalkeeper, just a much bigger audience.

At 26 years old, Okoye was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a French-German mother. He speaks six languages fluently and has become an ambassador for Enugu State in Nigeria. He wants to start charitable foundations and a football academy for local youth. He is also 1.9 meters tall, or 6 foot 6 inches, a detail that has appeared in almost every viral post about him.

The attention quickly moved beyond football Twitter and into mainstream entertainment. American R&B star Toni Braxton joined the conversation when a young woman shared a video of her elderly mother reacting to footage of the goalkeeper. Braxton responded warmly, saying, “Whose momma is this? I love her. Her and my mom should be friends.”

Ashley Camille, a digital creator from Los Angeles, apologized after she published a feature on the most attractive players at the World Cup without mentioning Okoye.

“He is not technically in the World Cup, but who cares,” Camille said. “Maduka Okoye is 6-foot-6 and he speaks six different languages. I said it once and I will say it again, football players are the hottest of any sport, period,” she added, pausing for effect.

The X account @El_lahh noted what was happening in America with a mix of amusement, “The girlies on American TikTok are drooling all over Maduka Okoye.”

Then came the most high-profile admission of all. British actress Sarah Hadland, known for her role in the BBC sitcom Miranda, appeared on ITV’s This Morning. When the conversation turned to the World Cup, Hadland lit up.

“I will be watching now (that) I have seen the Nigerian goalkeeper. Have you seen him? Wowee, thank you very much!” she exclaimed.

“I mean, he is absolutely gorgeous. I do not care if he can do Shakespeare. Looking lovely in a tight top, thank you.”

When a presenter asked if Okoye was causing problems in relationships due to his popularity, Hadland leaned in, saying, “Apparently, relationships have broken up because of him. I mean, I can understand it. People are obsessed. Women are obsessed. Maduka, if you are watching…” she said, making the studio audience laugh. The clip went viral quickly.

There was one major oversight in Hadland’s excitement. Nigeria had not qualified for the World Cup, meaning Okoye was not at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. But that did not seem to matter.

“Maduka Okoye surpassed 1 million Instagram followers in less than one week following his online success. Before this, he had about 250,000 followers,” reported @blackishpress.

When Okoye sat down for an interview with journalist Joy Ejaria for Ahlan Dubai while on holiday in the UAE, his audience had grown to over 1.3 million and was still increasing. The goalkeeper looked genuinely surprised.

“Honestly, I think I was not prepared for this because it was quite big,” he admitted.

“I have had some viral moments here and there, but nothing like this. I appreciate it. I am grateful and I appreciate the support from around the world.”

For those following his career, the timing was significant. Okoye had just returned to international football after a two-month suspension related to an illegal betting case. He had received a yellow card for time-wasting during a Serie A match against Lazio when Udinese was ahead 2-1.

He was brought back to Nigeria’s squad in November 2025 ahead of a CAF 2026 World Cup play-off in Morocco after his suspension ended. The return to the team, the Portugal friendly, the cameras, and the internet all came together in a way no one expected.

On the field, his season at Udinese had been impressive. He kept 10 clean sheets across 30 Serie A games, making him the first Nigerian goalkeeper to reach double figures in clean sheets in a top-five European league since the legendary Vincent Enyeama in 2015.

He was also named Udinese’s Player of The Season. His football skills are real. But the world found out about them in a different way.

He has also been open about how he handles the attention that comes with being popular. Speaking to NFF media officer Ayodele Ibidapo in another interview, the goalkeeper said he avoids discussing women publicly because comments can quickly be taken out of context.

“I do not really want to talk too much about women online because people will use anything you say. Anything can blow up,” he said.

“As a professional, you have to keep things separate. You cannot mix sports with too much attention from women and stuff like that. Honestly, it has always been part of my life because people have always been a little bit crazy about me. But I do not really pay too much attention to it. I appreciate the love, but I always try to stay professional.”

He also rejected the idea that his gym visits and looks are anything but professional preparation.

“All the fine boy nonsense. Yeah, I am a fine boy, but it is not that I am focusing on it. I was born like that. I am not going to the gym to look good,” he said.

“I am going to the gym to be fit, look healthy and perform better. But people think I put everything into that. My priorities are somewhere else than being a fine boy.”

Okoye is not the only viral sensation of this World Cup. Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha became famous after a great performance against Spain. But he at least played in the tournament. Okoye has become a star from the sidelines.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles did not qualify for a second World Cup in a row. This fact should have left them mostly unnoticed during this time. Instead, one of their players has become the most surprising story. Not through goals scored or trophies won, but through a pre-match walk, a broadcast camera, and an internet that decided it had found exactly who it was looking for.
