Former Super Eagles player Godwin Okpara has backed Victor Osimhen’s possible move to Paris Saint-Germain. He believes the Nigerian striker will shine at the French club and help them stay on top in European football, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Osimhen has been one of the hottest strikers in Europe this summer after a great season with Galatasaray. He scored 22 goals and made six assists in all competitions, helping the Turkish club win the Super Lig.
In his two seasons at Rams Park, Osimhen has netted 59 goals and provided 16 assists in 74 games. PSG, the current back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners, are interested in the 27-year-old as they look to add a natural striker. Okpara, who played for PSG during his career, thinks this move is good for both sides.
“It will make them stronger. For him, going to PSG, he knows he has played in the French league and knows how everything goes,” Okpara told Footy Africa. “It is a wonderful team for him, and it is a team that wants to win everything. It is a winning team.”
Okpara also mentioned Osimhen's earlier time in France. He scored 18 goals and made five assists in one season with Lille, showing that he can adapt and do well in Paris.
“I know next year they will be planning to win the Champions League again. So I think, why not? PSG might be in that shoe too. So for him, going to PSG, it will be a very good thing for Osimhen and for Nigeria as a whole,” the 53-year-old said.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid have also shown interest in Osimhen. Fichajes reports that the Spanish club has had early talks about a possible transfer, and the Nigerian is open to a move to La Liga.
Atletico’s interest comes from worries about Julian Alvarez, who is linked with a move to Arsenal. Barcelona was also interested in the Argentine but stepped back due to his €100m price tag.
Galatasaray wants at least €100m for Osimhen, and Atletico is ready to pay that amount if Alvarez leaves. Going to Madrid would also bring Osimhen together with Super Eagles teammate Ademola Lookman, who joined the club in January.
However, sources close to Osimhen say he will only leave Galatasaray if the club decides to sell him, as he recently downplayed talk of leaving. He has also caught the attention of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
If PSG wins the race, Osimhen could lead the attack for the French champions in the UEFA Super Cup final against Aston Villa on August 12.
