A last-minute goal from defender Przemyslaw Wisniewski stopped Nigeria from winning as the Super Eagles drew 2-2 with Poland in an international friendly in Warsaw on Wednesday night.
Coach Eric Chelle’s team seemed set for a good away win after Paul Onuachu scored from a penalty in the second half. But the Polish side equalized deep into stoppage time to share the points.
The Super Eagles started strong and took the lead in the 22nd minute. Terem Moffi scored after a great team play.
Moffi received a pass from Moses Simon and finished smoothly past the Polish goalkeeper. This was his third goal in three games for Nigeria.
The goal went through a VAR check because there were questions about Simon being offside. But the decision went in Nigeria’s favor.
After the opening goal, Nigeria got more confident. They nearly scored again before halftime when Tochukwu Nnadi hit a curling shot that just missed the target in the 39th minute.
Poland equalized just before the break. Kacper Potulski found the net to make it 1-1 going into halftime.
Chelle made several changes at halftime. He brought in Calvin Bassey, Paul Onuachu, Raphael Onyedika, Zaidu Sanusi, Philip Otele, Semi Ajayi, and Rafiu Durosinmi for Igho Ogbu, Moffi, Frank Onyeka, Bruno Onyemaechi, Adams, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Nnadi.
These substitutions brought fresh energy to Nigeria. Onuachu nearly scored right away in the 54th minute, but his header from a great cross went just wide.
A moment later, Onyedika shot over the bar, and Sanusi also came close with a strike that the Polish goalkeeper saved.
Nigeria regained the lead in the 76th minute. VAR awarded them a penalty for handball against a Polish defender.
Onuachu took the penalty and scored, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-1.
Poland pushed hard for another equalizer. They almost scored in the 80th minute, but goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made a fantastic double save to keep Nigeria ahead.
Just when it looked like Nigeria would win, Wisniewski scored from close range in the final moments to make it 2-2 and save a draw for Poland.
Nigeria will continue their European tour with another friendly against Portugal next Wednesday.
