Nigeria's Draw with Poland: Highlights and Takeaways

Nigeria’s preparations for their international matches continued with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw. The Super Eagles took the lead twice but could not secure a win due to a dramatic equaliser at the end.

After winning the Unity Cup in London, Eric Chelle’s team came to Poland to keep their momentum going against a well-respected European football nation. The match delivered excitement with four goals, VAR drama, standout performances, and a late twist that left both teams sharing points.

Terem Moffi scored first for Nigeria, but Kacper Potulski equalised for Poland just before half-time. Paul Onuachu then put the Super Eagles ahead again from the penalty spot, only for Przemysław Wiśniewski to level the match for Poland with almost the last kick of the game.

Key Takeaways from the Match

Bewene shines on his senior debut

One of the highlights for Nigeria was the great performance of Abdullahi Ibrahim Bewene, a former Golden Eaglets star.

At just 21 years old, he started the match in place of a natural right back. Bewene displayed maturity with a strong and disciplined performance.

He defended well, supported attacks when he could, and looked comfortable against experienced players. His energy and good decisions on the flank gave more options to Chelle as the Super Eagles integrate new players into the squad.

Super Eagles control early stages

Nigeria clearly dominated the first half and looked in control for much of it.

The Super Eagles, missing key midfielder Alex Iwobi, controlled possession, set the pace, and created better chances while Poland struggled to keep up.

Their solid play paid off when Moses Simon sent a great cross that Moffi finished for a simple goal.

Even after Poland equalised before halftime, Nigeria’s strong first half suggested they deserved to go into the break with a lead.

Okoye stands tall against Lewandowski

Maduka Okoye had one of his best performances for the national team, especially in the second half where he repeatedly stopped Poland captain Robert Lewandowski.

The Udinese goalkeeper first saved Nigeria after a back pass from Zaidu Sanusi put Lewandowski in front of goal. Okoye reacted quickly to make an incredible save.

He had to act again moments later, making another vital stop to deny Lewandowski up close.

As Nigeria’s defence contained him, Lewandowski’s frustration grew, leading to a heated moment with Raphael Onyedika in the second half.

VAR plays a big role

The Video Assistant Referee was key in two important moments that influenced the match.

Poland wanted a first-half penalty after Karol Świderski fell in the box after a challenge by Frank Onyeka. Referee Marian Barbu decided that Onyeka played the ball fairly and let play continue.

Later, Nigeria got a penalty after a VAR check showed that Nicola Zalewski handled the ball while trying to challenge Wilfred Ndidi. Although it was missed at first, VAR called for a review, and Barbu pointed to the penalty spot. Onuachu took the penalty and calmly scored, putting Nigeria back in front.

Two debut goals help Poland equalise

The match was also special for two Polish players who scored their first international goals.

Potulski scored his first for Poland when he reacted quickly to a rebound after Okoye saved Nicola Zalewski’s shot.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Wiśniewski hit a stunning long-range shot that went past Okoye and into the net, ensuring Poland avoided defeat in dramatic fashion.

Positive signs despite the late goal

Even though the late equaliser stopped Nigeria from winning, Chelle can take many positives from the game.

The Super Eagles showed good attacking play, created many chances, and matched a strong Polish team away from home. The emergence of Bewene, the goals from Moffi and Onuachu, and Okoye’s great performance all showed encouraging signs as Nigeria rebuilds for future competitive matches.

Yet, the failure to protect a lead is worrying, as Poland capitalised on Nigeria's defensive mistakes to snatch a draw in a match Nigeria seemed set to win.
