Nigeria’s preparations for their next international fixtures continued with an exciting 2-2 draw against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw. The Super Eagles took the lead twice but ended up sharing points after a dramatic late equaliser from Poland.
Fresh from winning the Unity Cup in London, Coach Eric Chelle’s team arrived in Poland eager to build on their success against one of Europe’s top football nations. The match was thrilling, featuring four goals, some VAR drama, impressive individual displays, and a late twist that left both teams with a point.
Terem Moffi scored first for Nigeria, but Kacper Potulski brought Poland level just before half-time. Paul Onuachu put the Super Eagles ahead again from the penalty spot, but Przemysław Wiśniewski equalised for Poland with almost the final kick of the game.
Here are the lessons from the match
Bewene shines on his debut
One of the highlights for Nigeria was the strong performance from Abdullahi Ibrahim Bewene, a former Golden Eaglets star.
With no natural right back available, the 21-year-old stepped up and delivered a solid performance. Bewene defended well, supported attacks whenever he could, and seemed at ease against experienced players. His energy and good decisions down the flank gave Chelle another good option as the Super Eagles work in new players.
Super Eagles control the first half
Nigeria looked the stronger side in the first half, clearly in control for long stretches of the game.
The Super Eagles, missing their key midfielder Alex Iwobi, controlled possession and created more chances while Poland struggled to keep up with their pace and movement. Their dominance paid off when Moses Simon sent a great cross that Moffi finished for an easy goal.
Even though Poland found an equaliser before half-time, Nigeria’s first-half performance suggested they should have gone into the break with a lead.
Okoye shines against Lewandowski
Maduka Okoye had one of his best games for Nigeria, especially in the second half when he stopped several attempts from Poland’s captain Robert Lewandowski.
Okoye first saved Nigeria after a poor back pass from Zaidu Sanusi gave Lewandowski a clear chance. He reacted quickly to make an excellent save. Moments later, he was tested again and made another vital save from close range, frustrating the Polish striker.
As Nigeria’s defence worked to limit Lewandowski’s chances, he grew more frustrated, even having a heated moment with Raphael Onyedika in the second half.
VAR in the spotlight
The Video Assistant Referee was a big part of two key moments in the game.
Poland believed they deserved a penalty in the first half when Karol Świderski went down in the box after a challenge from Frank Onyeka. The referee, Marian Barbu, decided that Onyeka fairly won the ball and allowed play to continue.
Later, Nigeria got a penalty after VAR intervened to rule that Nicola Zalewski handled the ball while challenging Wilfred Ndidi. Although the referee missed it at first, he checked the video and awarded the penalty. Onuachu stepped up and scored, giving Nigeria the lead again.
Poland fights back with debut goals
The match also marked a special moment for two Polish players who scored their first international goals.
Potulski netted his first goal for Poland by reacting quickly to a rebound after Okoye saved Zalewski’s shot. Then, deep into stoppage time, Wiśniewski hit a stunning long-range shot that went past Okoye and into the net, allowing Poland to escape with a draw.
Encouraging signs despite the late equaliser
Though Nigeria could not secure a win, Chelle will take some positives from the performance.
The Super Eagles showed good attacking play, created many chances, and matched a strong Polish team away from home. Bewene’s emergence, the goals from Moffi and Onuachu, and Okoye’s outstanding performance all provided hope as Nigeria works on rebuilding ahead of future competitions.
Still, the failure to protect a lead is a worry, as Poland capitalised on defensive mistakes to snatch a draw in a game Nigeria looked set to win.
