One person has died and another is seriously injured in different incidents involving a truck crash and a building collapse in Lagos State.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olawale Afolabi, shared this information in a statement on Friday.
Afolabi said that one person died in a partial building collapse at Lekki Phase 1 on Friday. He also mentioned that three people were rescued after a truck crashed into a Sports Utility Vehicle on Old Abeokuta Road on Thursday night.
The truck accident happened at about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday. An articulated vehicle carrying a 40-foot container reportedly lost its brakes while going down Old Abeokuta Road.
The truck lost control and smashed head-on into a Toyota Highlander with registration number KRD 179KL. The driver of the SUV suffered severe fractures in both legs and his left arm. He was rescued from the wreckage.
Afolabi explained, "At 22:40 on June 4, 2026, a truck laden with a 40ft container suffered brake failure while going down Old Abeokuta Road inward Abattoir. The vehicle lost control and collided head-on with a peach-colored Toyota Highlander, registration number KRD 179KL."
He continued, "The driver of the Highlander, an adult male, sustained severe fractures to both legs and his left arm and was trapped in the wreckage. Two other occupants escaped uninjured. No fatalities were recorded."
Afolabi added that emergency responders worked throughout the night to rescue the trapped victim and clear the accident scene. Recovery operations involving the truck and its container were finished on Friday, allowing normal traffic to return.
In a separate incident, a three-storey building under construction partially collapsed at No. 1 Josephine Fingesi Street, off Wole Olateju Street, Lekki Phase 1.
Afolabi reported that nine people were affected by the collapse. One person was found dead, while seven adult males were rescued alive and treated by emergency responders. One other person is still missing.
"Seven adult males were rescued alive and stabilised by emergency responders, one adult male was confirmed dead at the scene and his remains recovered, while one adult male remains missing," he stated.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said search and rescue operations are ongoing. They are working with the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other emergency groups.
He noted that they are increasing efforts to ensure no victim is trapped under the rubble.
"Our priority remains saving lives. We are working carefully and with relevant agencies to ensure no victim is left behind while keeping safety for responders," the statement said.
