Onojuvwevwo Wins Nigeria's First Women’s 400m Medal in 30 Years

Ella Onojuvwevwo is excited after winning Nigeria’s first medal in the women’s 400m at the Commonwealth Games since 1994. She secured a bronze medal on Saturday at the Glasgow 2026 Games, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Onojuvwevwo ran impressively, finishing third with a season’s best time of 51.00 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium. She is the first Nigerian woman to medal in this event at the Commonwealth Games since Fatima Yusuf.

Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley took gold with a time of 50.21 seconds. Barbados’ Sada Williams finished just ahead of Onojuvwevwo, taking silver in 50.99 seconds.

After the race, Onojuvwevwo shared her joy about the medal. She said it means a lot to her, especially after such a long wait for Nigeria to win a medal in this event.

“I am really happy. I got a lot of support from back home, from my parents, my coach, my teammates and everybody in Team Nigeria. They believe in me, and I am thankful for everything. I am really happy to be the bronze medallist after a very long time,” she said.

This year, the sprinter turned professional and expressed her enjoyment of making that change.

“It is really fun when you are running for money. I am just having fun and going with the flow overall,” she said.

Speaking about the race conditions, Onojuvwevwo mentioned that she had to change her strategy because of the wind.

“It was really windy and cold, so I made sure to stay strong and try to stay relaxed on the back straight because that is where the wind really is. I made sure to stay relaxed and keep a lot of strength to finish,” she said.

Looking ahead, she said she has more competitions lined up this season. She is hopeful about participating in the World Championships.

“I still have more competitions, and hopefully I will be at the World Championships.”
