Onwuzurike wins silver in 200m at Commonwealth Games

Udodi Onwuzurike won silver in the men’s 200m final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday night. He ran his best time of the season, finishing in 20.09 seconds (+1.7) at Scotstoun Stadium. This added another medal to Team Nigeria’s collection.

The 23-year-old raced from lane eight and came in second, behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who won gold in 19.96 seconds. Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor took home the bronze with a time of 20.11 seconds, after a tight finish.

This silver medal is a big achievement for Onwuzurike. He first made headlines in 2021 when he became the first Nigerian man to win the 200m at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.

Injuries and tough competition slowed his progress on the senior stage. But now, winning at the Commonwealth Games is the biggest medal of his career, showing he has moved from a youth star to a top athlete.

Onwuzurike faced tough competition from Olympic finalists and seasoned Commonwealth medal winners. He ran confidently from the curve and kept his cool down the home straight, securing Nigeria’s sixth silver medal of the Games.

This result marks a comeback for him. He has improved his personal best to 19.76 seconds and is set to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He is now one of Africa’s fastest athletes.

With Onwuzurike’s silver, Team Nigeria’s medal count reached eighteen at the Glasgow Games. This includes nine gold, six silver, and three bronze medals. There are still chances for more medals as the Games continue.
