Udodi Onwuzurike wants to be the first Nigerian to win a men’s 200m medal at the Commonwealth Games in 32 years. He secured his spot in the final in Glasgow on Thursday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Onwuzurike kept up his strong performance, finishing the semi-final in 20.22 seconds. He is now aiming for a Commonwealth Games medal in the event.
The 23-year-old came into Glasgow with a season’s best of 20.18 seconds. He achieved this time while finishing third at the Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest earlier this month. His personal best stands at 19.76 seconds, making him a top contender for the podium.
Other strong competitors in the final include Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor and Jevaughn Powell, Ghana’s Paul Amoah, Canada’s Aaron Brown, South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, and Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy. Kennedy also won silver in the men’s 100m, making the upcoming final even more competitive.
For Onwuzurike, this final is a chance to improve on his sixth-place finish at the 2022 Games. In that event, Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards won gold in 19.80 seconds, while Ghana’s Amoah took home the bronze.
One notable surprise in the semi-finals was the exit of Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme. He had hoped to win both the 100m and 200m after his stunning victory in the 100m.
Eseme set a Games record of 9.83 seconds to win the 100m on Tuesday. He narrowly beat Australia’s Kennedy, who ran a national record of 9.85 seconds for silver. Nigeria’s fastest man, Kayinsola Ajayi, finished third in 9.90 seconds.
On Friday, Onwuzurike will try to become the first Nigerian to win a medal in the men’s 200m since Daniel Effiong’s bronze in 1994.
As a former world U-20 champion, Onwuzurike has shown he can compete with the best. He hopes to turn his strong performance in Glasgow into a historic medal and end Nigeria’s long wait for a podium finish in this event.
