Peter Obi talks about his bond with Soludo during debt discussions

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, revealed that many Nigerians may not know that he and his wife are godparents to Governor Charles Soludo’s children.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, made this statement on Friday at the 22nd Conference of the Guild of Editors in Enugu. This came during a debate about debts between him and Soludo’s government.

The conference was themed "The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive."

As a guest at the event, Obi denied claims that he and Soludo were in a conflict. He said, "People might not know. My wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children."

He added, "Yes. We are that close. We are not quarrelling. I will never quarrel with him. If I see him any day, he and I will hug. If they say anything, I’ll answer them," he said.

Obi did not mention how many of Soludo’s children they are godparents to. PREMIUM TIMES reports that Soludo has four daughters and two sons.

A godparent is someone who witnesses a child’s baptism. Parents usually choose godparents based on close relationships with the families.

Obi also repeated what he said during his appearance on Arise News’ Prime Time on Thursday. He claimed he left over $150 million in the state treasury when he finished his term as governor.

"Like I said yesterday, I did not leave debt in Anambra State. The day I left office, I left $150 million in savings."

He added, "No other governor has left dollars before. If you see one, tell me."

Obi mentioned that even if he disagrees with politicians like President Bola Tinubu, he will never insult him or any governor.

"I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in the federal government. I’ve never abused anybody."

He continued, "Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the president of the country; he has all my respect," he said.

The NDC candidate stressed that while respect for public officials is important, Nigerians and the media should still question their actions and performance.

Obi emphasized that the character and behavior of political leaders could affect the well-being of society. He urged editors to examine politicians based on their records, statements, and qualifications.
