Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for 2027, has shared his plans for Nigeria if he wins the upcoming election.
Mr Obi, who was once the governor of Anambra State, spoke on Thursday evening at the NDC’s town hall meeting at Amadeo Event Centre in Enugu.
He promised to tackle Nigeria’s electricity problem by generating, transmitting, and distributing at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity if he becomes president in 2027.
Mr Obi sees electricity as a top priority for his government. He believes a reliable power supply is crucial for bringing back industries, creating jobs, and boosting economic activities in Nigeria.
"As I promised, we will generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity, because we want industrial work," he stated.
To put this in perspective, Nigeria's current total electricity generation stands at about 5,403.3 megawatts, based on data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria's National Control Centre as of September 2026.
The NDC candidate also spoke about the growing insecurity in Nigeria. He assured that his government would take strong action to handle this issue.
"As president of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As president of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with security," he promised.
Mr Obi also said he would declare emergencies in education and in the fight against corruption. He plans to ensure that primary healthcare is available in every ward across the country.
He pointed out that Nigeria needs a leader who has the skills, compassion, and commitment to solve its economic and security problems and to rebuild trust in the government.
"Today, our country is suffering. Today, people are hungry. Today, our children do not have employment. Today, Nigeria is not secure," he said.
Mr Obi encouraged Nigerians to choose a president who can bring unity, security, and create a better environment for economic growth.
"As president of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As president of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with insecurity," he reiterated.
He added that public money should be used for the benefit of citizens. He promised to ensure more transparency and accountability in how the government spends and borrows money.
"People must stop stealing public money. Public money must be used for public good. That is why I am making my commitment. We will be accountable, we will be open," he said.
Mr Obi assured that Nigerians would know how any government borrowing would be used and what it is for.
He emphasized the importance of education and healthcare, saying that every child should have access to schooling and that primary healthcare services should be available in every ward.
Recently, President Bola Tinubu sent a letter to the National Assembly asking for approval for a new loan.
The letter requested permission to process external loans worth $20,517,755,901 and €1,045,083,643 under the 2026, 2027 Supplementary External Borrowing Plan.
At the town hall meeting, Mr Obi challenged Mr Tinubu to campaign across the nation and explain what his administration has done since 2023, especially regarding the loans taken.
He believes Nigerians deserve to hear from politicians seeking their votes and to assess their records and proposals before making decisions at the polls.
Mr Obi also criticized the president’s foreign travels, demanding clarity on government spending.
"We are asking him, please spend at least 36 days and go round Nigeria and tell them what you have been doing for the past three years," he said.
He insisted that presidential candidates should connect with Nigerians all over the country instead of just staying in Abuja and asking for support without proper engagement.
"He must go round Nigeria and tell them what he used nearly $100 billion he borrowed for," he said.
