Plateau State government reassures drivers after recent attacks

The Plateau State Government has condemned the killing of residents in Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. They assured motorists that the Jos-Barkin Ladi highway is open and safe for travel.

Joyce Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, released a statement on Friday. She said the attack happened on Thursday, 24 September, and resulted in loss of lives. She called it "deeply regrettable and unacceptable."

Ramnap stated that security agencies would work to find and arrest those responsible for the attack. She urged residents and families of the victims to stay calm and avoid blocking the highway.

She mentioned that the government understands the pain of affected families and communities. But she warned that road blockades could endanger other travelers.

"The Government wishes to assure travellers that the road is clear and open to motorists and other road users," she said. She encouraged residents to stay alert and cooperate with security agencies.

The Kassa attack happened during a new wave of violence in Plateau, especially in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Mangu, and Riyom areas.

Reports say at least nine people died in separate attacks across Barkin Ladi and nearby communities between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Five people died at Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi on September 19. Two others, including a pastor, were killed at Dorowa Babuje while heading to church.

Other killings took place at Baten Wereng in Riyom and Ratyidi in Fan District. In response, the state government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, and Mangu. This curfew restricts movement from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and bans motorcycle use in these areas.

The government said these measures are meant to help security agencies stabilize the affected areas and prevent more attacks. Ramnap noted that the government is committed to working with security agencies and communities to strengthen security and promote lasting peace.

She also called on traditional, religious, and community leaders to help prevent further violence and maintain peace in Kassa, Barkin Ladi, and other vulnerable communities.
