Police arrest girls for attacking student in viral video

The Plateau State Police have arrested some female students over a viral video showing them attacking another girl in Pankshin Local Government Area.

Police spokesman, SP Alfred Alabo, shared this news in a statement on Friday in Jos. He said the Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, ordered an immediate investigation and arrest of those involved.

“Immediately the CP got wind of it, he directed the Area Commander in Pankshin LGC to act immediately, which they have done,” he said.

Alabo mentioned that the arrested students will be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the initial investigations are done. He also said that they would be charged in court once investigations are complete.

He condemned the attack and described jungle justice and other forms of violence as serious crimes. Alabo noted that recording and sharing violent acts on social media can open up the offenders to more charges, including cybercrime.

“In the process of committing this crime, sometimes you will commit several other crimes,
“It is not just you beating somebody or meting violence against your fellow human being; even having the mind to record it is cybercrime,” Alabo said.

He called on youths and everyone to avoid taking the law into their hands, no matter what the disagreement is. “Learn to report to a third party that has the authority to hear your matter and give you the justice that you deserve,” he said.

Alabo urged people to report any grievances or criminal acts to the Police or other security agencies instead of resorting to violence. He also asked the public to keep providing timely and accurate information to security agencies.

He said this kind of information helps security agencies to act quickly and stop situations from getting worse. Alabo stressed that the arrested students would be sent to the State CID and face court charges after investigations.

“Stay clear of jungle justice. Report cases anytime you are aggrieved to the right and appropriate authority,” Alabo warned. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the girls are students of the Federal University of Education in Pankshin.
