The Ogun State Police have arrested six suspects and recovered firearms, ammunition, generators, and mobile phones during operations targeting criminal groups in Abeokuta, Wasimi, and Ibafo.

The police shared this news in a statement on their official Facebook page on Wednesday. They said coordinated efforts by the Violent Crime Response Unit, Special Weapons and Tactics Unit, and Ibafo Division helped disrupt criminal activities like illegal possession of firearms, theft, conspiracy, armed intimidation, and receiving stolen goods.

The statement, signed by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, named the arrested suspects as Afisu Awesu, Bala Aminu, Moruf Sodiq, also called "Okiki", Mumuni Amodu, known as "Stone", Abayomi John, known as "Ibafo", and Adeboye Ojesina.

The police found several items during these operations. These included one pump-action rifle, one locally made pistol, two live cartridges, one used cartridge, five generators, and nine Android phones believed to be stolen.

In one operation, the Violent Crime Response Unit acted on reliable information on May 30. They arrested Moruf Sodiq, also known as "Okiki", for his role in a generator theft ring in Abeokuta and nearby areas. The statement said, "Acting on credible and time-sensitive intelligence on May 30, 2026, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit swiftly trailed and arrested Moruf Sodiq 'M' alias 'Okiki', a key suspect linked to a coordinated generator theft network operating within Abeokuta and environs."

After his arrest, Sodiq led police to Mumuni Amodu, alias "Stone", who was said to be receiving stolen goods. A search at Amodu's place turned up four Elepaq generators, one Sumec Fireman generator, and nine Android phones thought to be stolen.

The police also arrested Abayomi John, alias "Ibafo", a motorcycle rider who supposedly helped transport and support the gang during their operations. The police stated, "In a further breakthrough, operatives arrested Abayomi John 'M' alias 'Ibafo', a motorcyclist who allegedly provided rapid logistics support, conveying suspects to targeted locations during operations."

The suspects are now in custody as investigations continue to find and arrest other gang members. In another operation, police arrested 58-year-old Adeboye Ojesina on June 12. He was accused of illegal possession of firearms and threatening people in Wasimi and nearby communities.

The police stated, "On June 12, 2026, acting on credible and actionable intelligence, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit swiftly apprehended Mr Adeboye Ojesina 'M', aged 58 years, in connection with unlawful possession of firearms and alleged use of same to threaten residents within Wasimi and adjoining communities."

After Ojesina's arrest, police found a locally made pistol, a pump-action rifle, two live cartridges, and one used cartridge. The statement said, "A prompt search led to the recovery of one locally fabricated pistol, one pump-action rifle, two live cartridges, and one expended cartridge."

Initially, Ojesina denied owning the weapons but later claimed he found the pistol nearby and fired it to check if it worked. He also said an unknown person gave him the pump-action rifle and police are looking for that person.

Additionally, police discovered a vehicle parts theft ring after a complaint on June 13 about theft at a site in Igbeti Sote Village near Ibafo. Officers caught Afisu Awesu trying to steal a forklift engine part with an accomplice who escaped.

Further investigation showed the suspects had stolen forklift tires from the same place and sold them to Bala Aminu in Ibafo. Police quickly arrested Aminu as the person receiving stolen property. They are still trying to catch the accomplice and break up the remaining parts of the gang.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the operatives for their successful work. He commended their quick response, professionalism, and operational efficiency.

He assured the public that the police are committed to intelligence-led policing and will continue to fight against crime in the state. The commissioner promised residents that they will keep up proactive policing and respond quickly to security issues, reinforcing the police's commitment to keeping Ogun State safe.
