Police charge man for stealing car batteries in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has charged a 29-year-old man, Oshim Daniel, in an Enugu State Magistrate Court. He is accused of stealing car batteries and other valuables from people in the Alulu-Nike community in Enugu State.

The police shared this news on Saturday through its spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe. The suspect is being held in a correctional facility until the case is heard and decided.

The statement said that officers from the Abakpa Police Division saved the suspect from a mob on July 29. He was allegedly caught stealing car batteries and other valuables the day before.

"The Enugu State Police Command has charged a 29-year-old suspect, Oshim Daniel, who was rescued from a mob by officers from the Abakpa Division on July 29, 2026. The suspect is accused of stealing car batteries and other valuables from residents of Alulu-Nike, Enugu, on July 28, 2026," the statement said.

Police investigations reportedly connected the suspect to the theft of three car batteries from different victims. The batteries were worth N150,000, N45,000, and N32,000, and their owners identified them.

Ndukwe mentioned that officers also found a public address system, a Point-of-Sale device, a gas cylinder, a car stereo, a spare tire, and other items believed to be stolen by the suspect.

"The suspect confessed to the crime and was charged with three counts of stealing against the Criminal Code of Enugu State, 2004. After his arraignment, the court held him until the case is heard and decided," the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Giwa, praised the officers for saving the suspect from mob action and making sure he was charged through the right process.

"The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, praised the officers and encouraged citizens to follow the law by handing over arrested suspects to the Police for proper investigation and prosecution instead of taking the law into their own hands," Ndukwe said.

The police commissioner also urged car owners to improve their vehicle security. He suggested using good locks and anti-theft devices and registering their vehicles with the Nigeria Police Electronic Central Motor Registry to help protect their cars and recover stolen ones.
