The Cross River State Police have arrested a 36-year-old man named Ushie Joseph. He is suspected to be part of a local vigilante group. He was arrested over an alleged armed robbery and the shooting of one Amachi Victor in the Etung Local Government Area.
The police reported that the incident happened around 1:45 am on Thursday, September 17, 2026. This followed an attack on the victim at about 11 pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in Effraya Village, Etung.
In a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the police revealed that early investigations showed that the suspect allegedly shot the victim with a locally made pistol. The statement was shared with journalists on Saturday in Calabar.
The police spokesman said that after the shooting, the victim was taken to a hospital in Ikom, where he is still receiving treatment.
The statement included, “The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a suspected member of a local vigilante group, Ushie Joseph ‘m’, 36 years, in connection with an alleged armed robbery and shooting incident involving one Amachi Victor, 36, of Effraya Village, Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State.
“The incident was reported at about 1:45 am on 17 September 2026, following an alleged attack on the victim at about 11 pm on 16 September 2026.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly attacked and shot the victim with a locally fabricated pistol during the incident.”
The police also mentioned that detectives visited both the crime scene and the hospital as part of their investigation.
The victim claimed that he was robbed of $5,000 during the attack. “The victim further alleged that he was robbed of the sum of Five Thousand United States Dollars (US$5,000) during the incident. The allegation remains subject to investigation and will be established through evidence and due legal process,” Eitokpah stated.
Following some intelligence, the police operatives tracked the suspect to his hideout and arrested him. They also recovered a locally made pistol believed to be used in the crime as evidence.
The Commissioner of Police in Cross River, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, responded to the incident. He instructed the investigating team to carry out a thorough investigation. He emphasized that all relevant evidence should be documented properly and that the suspect should face due process according to the law.
The police assured the public that they would provide updates as the investigation continues.
