Police Caution Against Unapproved Drone Use in Plateau

The Plateau State Police Command has warned people and companies not to fly drones without the necessary approvals.

In a notice released on Sunday, the Command's Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, said anyone caught could face arrest, have their equipment taken, and be prosecuted.

Mr Alabo explained that the warning aims to boost security, protect important infrastructure, and ensure everyone follows the rules for flying drones, also known as uncrewed aerial vehicles, in the state.

He mentioned that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is the body responsible for giving permits for drone operations in Nigeria.

The command noted that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, especially Part 17 which covers remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), requires operators to get approval and have an accepted security plan before flying drones.

According to the police, those operating drones must also present their security plans before flying. This includes details on where they plan to fly, the schedule, and safety measures they will take.

The command warned that drones cannot be used for illegal activities. This includes carrying unauthorized items, weapons, or explosives.

It also advised against operating drones in a way that might cause death, serious injury, damage to property or the environment, or put public safety at risk.

The police urged drone operators to follow safety rules. This includes keeping visual contact with their drones, flying at approved heights, and staying away from restricted and no-fly zones.

The command added that unauthorized drone operations that invade people's privacy could lead to harassment, intimidation, trespassing, or actions that might disrupt peace.

"The Command hereby cautions individuals and corporate bodies against illegal drone operations and advises them to comply with extant regulations," Mr Alabo said.

The command stated it would collaborate with other security agencies to enforce the regulations. This includes arresting violators, seizing drones that violate the rules, and prosecuting those responsible.

It also called on residents to be watchful and report any suspicious drone activities to the nearest police station or the command's control room.

The police made it clear that they will not allow Plateau's airspace to become a place of lawlessness that could threaten public safety and security.
